A loss to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final was difficult enough to swallow, but a 2-1 exit at Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday raised fresh questions about Arsenal’s consistency under pressure. Two consecutive defeats (their first of the entire season) is not the ideal preparation for a Champions League knockout tie away from home.

That said, the Premier League title race remains well within Arsenal’s grasp. Nine points clear at the top of the table, Arteta’s men still have the league in their own hands, albeit having played a game more than second-placed Manchester City. And in Europe, Arsenal arrive at this stage with an unblemished record, the only side yet to lose a match in this season’s Champions League. They topped the league phase with a perfect record before dispatching Bayer Leverkusen across two legs in the round of 16, with goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice sealing a 2-0 second-leg victory at the Emirates.

Sporting, meanwhile, enter this tie on the back of three consecutive victories, scoring at least four goals in every one of them. Their 5-0 demolition of Bodø/Glimt in the round of 16 second leg (overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit) was one of the moments of the Champions League season, and Rui Borges’ side have not looked back since. Their home form this season borders on frightening: 17 straight wins at José Alvalade, including five from five in European competition.

The Viktor Gyokeres subplot adds an extra layer of intrigue. The Swedish striker, who scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting before joining Arsenal last summer returns to his former home in exceptional form, having netted five times in his last three appearances across club and country. Alvalade was his stage for years. On Tuesday, it becomes enemy territory.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal When & Where?

Date: Tuesday, 7th April 2026
Time: 8:00 PM local (7:00 PM BST)
Venue: José Alvalade Stadium, Lisbon, Portugal

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal Team News

Embed from Getty Images

Arsenal head into this tie with significant defensive concerns. Gabriel Magalhães was forced off during the Southampton defeat, and Arteta’s post-match update offered little reassurance with the Brazilian centre-back is a major doubt for Tuesday. Several players who missed Saturday’s game following the international break are expected to return, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Jurrien Timber all in contention to feature. However, Eberechi Eze, Piero Hincapié and Mikel Merino are confirmed absentees, continuing their recoveries from injury.

For Sporting, the big concern is captain Morten Hjulmand is suspended for this clash meaning Daniel Bragança is expected to partner Hidemasa Morita in a double pivot. Luis Suárez, who has scored four times in Sporting’s last three Champions League home games, missed their most recent outing and his availability is in doubt. If he cannot start, Rafael Nel, who scored in that game is the likely replacement up top. Fotis Ioannidis, Geovany Quenda, Nuno Santos and Luis Guilherme are all ruled out or doubtful, while Iván Fresneda, who missed the last match through illness, is touch and go.

Pre-Match Tactical Analysis

Embed from Getty Images

Arteta will be acutely aware of the dangers Sporting carry at home. Rui Borges has built a side that is relentless in transition, explosive in attack and virtually impossible to contain at José Alvalade. With Hjulmand suspended, the double pivot of Bragança and Morita becomes the pivot of everything, their ability to win the ball back quickly and shift tempo will be central to Sporting’s game plan against Arsenal’s technically gifted midfield.

Arsenal’s shape without Gabriel alongside Saliba will be something Arteta needs to manage carefully. Cristhian Mosquera is the likely partner, and while he has shown composure on the ball, the combination of Trincão, Pedro Gonçalves and Suárez or Nel will test his reading of the game. The Gunners cannot afford to be caught high up the pitch. Expect Zubimendi to sit deep and shield the defence while Rice and Ødegaard look to control possession.

Offensively, Gyokeres and Saka represent Arsenal’s greatest threats in transition. Sporting’s full-backs push forward aggressively, and the spaces behind them could be ruthlessly exploited by a side of Arsenal’s quality on the break. The Gunners will not look to sit and defend (that is not the Arteta way) but they will need to be compact and disciplined in a way they have not been over the last two matches.

Key Players

Viktor Gyokeres

Embed from Getty Images

There is no more fitting subplot heading into this game. Gyokeres knows every corner of José Alvalade, the runs, the spaces, the crowd. But this time, he lines up on the opposite side. In electric form with five goals in three games, the Swede does not need extra motivation for this one. He will back himself to hurt the side that built him, and if Arsenal are to take a first-leg advantage back to the Emirates, he is the man most likely to deliver it.

Pedro Gonçalves

Embed from Getty Images

Pote is the heartbeat of this Sporting side, a player who operates between the lines with intelligence and carries a constant goal threat. He scored in the 4-2 victory over Santa Clara last Friday and has been one of the standout performers in Sporting’s Champions League campaign. Against an Arsenal midfield that may be without its usual defensive solidity, Gonçalves will look to exploit any gaps and pull the strings from deeper positions. He is the man Arteta’s side must keep quiet if they want a clean sheet.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal Predicted Lineups

Sporting Lisbon predicted lineup: Silva; Vagiannidis, Diomandé, Inácio, Mangas; BRAGANÇA, Morita; Catamo, Trincão, Gonçalves; Suárez

Arsenal predicted lineup: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Mosquera, Calafiori; Zubimendi, Rice, Ødegaard; Martinelli, Gyokeres, Saka

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal Prediction

This is as evenly matched a tie as you will find in this round of the Champions League. Sporting’s home form is genuinely extraordinary (17 consecutive wins at Alvalade is not a run that breaks easily) and they arrive with three-game scoring momentum that would concern any side. Arsenal, on the other hand, are unbeaten in Europe all season and possess the individual quality to hurt anyone on their day.

The absence of Gabriel and Hjulmand is significant for both sides. Arsenal’s defensive vulnerability could be the deciding factor in the first leg, particularly against a Sporting attack that has been in devastating form. Expect goals at both ends, a tightly contested first leg, and a tie that very much remains alive heading into the return fixture at the Emirates.

Prediction: Sporting Lisbon 2-2 Arsenal

Arsenal travel to Estádio José Alvalade on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon and the timing could hardly be more delicate for Mikel Arteta’s side.
